Elena Walch’s Pinot Nero ‘Ludwig’ 2021 awarded “Best Pinot Noir of Italy” at the national Italian Pinot Noir competition 2024
Elena Walch's Pinot Nero ‘Ludwig’ Alto Adige DOC 2021 ranked first at the 26th „Pinot Noir Days“ in Egna/Montagna (Bolzano). This is the third time that ‘Ludwig’ has been crowned winner, having already been awarded first with the 2017 and 2010 vintages.
‘We are very proud of this recognition, as this grape variety has been close to our hearts for many years and we try to bring the best possible expression into the glass year after year,’ says Karoline Walch. Created for the first time in 2002, the Pinot Nero ‘Ludwig’ comes from a strict selection of grapes from steep vineyards at medium altitudes of 450 to 600 metres above sea level. It is a combination of both sides of the valley, with the vineyard in Glen in an elevated position with a south-west exposure and the vineyard in Barleit, Caldaro, with its south-east exposure, contributing a milder climate. The higher plot provides elegance and freshness, while Barleit contributes structure and body. A limited production of only 12,000 bottles is evidence of the careful selection; the main requirement for a Pinot Noir of the highest quality.
