The new lightweight bottle for the Selezione wines

Elena Walch: Sustainability at the heart of innovation with the new lightweight bottle for the Selezione wines
The new bottles for the Selezione Elena Walch line, in the Borgognotta format, will be reduced to just 395 grams, representing a 21% decrease from the initial weight of 500 grams. This innovation helps reduce CO2 emissions by cutting 64 tons of CO2 annually and marks an important milestone in the path toward a more sustainable future.
The pursuit of an increasingly lighter bottle stems from a thorough CO2 emissions analysis conducted in 2022 by the Ökoinstitut Alto Adige. The CO2 balance revealed that a significant portion of emissions comes from the production and transport of the bottles, particularly Scope-3 emissions, which account for 53% of the winery's overall emissions. This insight led the company to search for concrete solutions to reduce its environmental impact, resulting in the creation of lighter premium bottles, perfect for the Selezione wines.

"We have chosen this new bottle, weighing only 395 grams, recognized internationally as a 'lightweight bottle.' It’s a concrete step that demonstrates our ongoing commitment to reducing our CO2 footprint, fully respecting the environment," says Karoline Walch.
The move to a lighter bottle is just the latest in a series of actions Elena Walch has taken over the years to ensure a positive environmental impact. The adoption of sustainable practices has been a long-standing commitment, including energy efficiency in the winery, the use of renewable energy, and responsible management of water and land resources. The company has always opted for eco-friendly materials, reducing plastic use and preferring recyclable packaging.

In addition to the new bottle introduction, Elena Walch is also pleased to announce the redesign of the Selezione line’s labels. The new labels, with a modern and elegant design, maintain the iconic elements that have made them famous, such as the golden mountains and golden band, but are enhanced with tactile embossing that makes the sensory experience unique. With this redesign, the Selezione wines acquire an even more distinctive presence while maintaining their recognizable identity, ensuring they continue to enjoy the success they deserve.
"We wanted to preserve the elements that make the labels of our Selezione line unique and distinctive, such as the mountains and the golden band, but reinterpret them in a more contemporary version. The golden mountains and the vineyards below will be embossed, creating a refined yet clearly perceptible tactile effect. With this redesign, we aim to give our products an even more distinctive presence, confident that they will continue to achieve the success they deserve," says Julia Walch.
In 2024, Elena Walch also achieved the VIVA Certification, a program by the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security that recognizes wineries adopting eco-friendly practices, respecting the land, and contributing to the quality of Italian wine. The VIVA Certification is the result of a constant commitment to improving sustainable practices and promoting product quality, combining environmental respect with the enhancement of the territory.
